There is so much to read and learn about nutrition and healthier lifestyle choices. It is no wonder so many of us are confused. The inconsistencies with regard for what is good for us can be overwhelming at times. First let’s talk about the difference between wellness and health. Are they the same? I don’t think so.
As a person who speaks with many different people about their health, I encounter a variety of interpretations of what others consider to be healthy. Sometimes they feel they are healthy when they hear from their doctors that 4 or 5 of their medications are working for them. This baffles me. When we talk about our healthcare system, is it really healthcare or is it more about sickcare? When does your insurance cover a visit with a professional to learn how you can be healthier?
Wellness on the other hand is a pretty powerful concept to me. One day while creating a slide show for a presentation, and wishing to convey the concept of health not simply being the absence of symptoms, I came across a graphic that excites me even to this day. You know how it is when you find that perfect graphic that expresses exactly what you are trying to get across.
This Illness - Wellness Continuum graphic designed by Dr John W. Travis, helps us to understand the relationship between disease and wellness as existing on a continuum. The state of your health at any given moment will be somewhere on this graph, and if you’re not striving for wellness when making certain choices you can move to the left in small steps until you realize you are in trouble. That said, how far to the left do you want to be? How far to the right do you want to be?
Some of you may be reading this and feeling like your hands are tied because you are so far to the left that you can’t make your way back. Not necessarily so! There are at least as many alternative modalities to help your body to heal itself that you may have not learned of as there are more blogging days left on this blog challenge. Many of us are not taking the time to address our level of wellness because we are too busy trying to get things done, feeling stressed 24/7 and not realizing it has become our new normal. Wellness means taking time to reflect on how we are living, what other choices we may have, planning and cooking meals made with real food, dealing with negative emotions, taking time to relax, breathe, meditate, socialize, laugh and just be.
My point is that our life choices, not only matter, but maybe the very thing that got us where we are on that graphic. It is never too late to decide that, "Today is the day I want to work toward becoming the healthier happier version of myself that I deserve to be.”
